Green Nairobi CEC Member Maureen Njeri./HANDOUTNairobi is shifting gears in its fight against waste, unveiling a coordinated, multi-agency clean-up strategy that will see the Climate Worx programme fully integrated into the county’s routine sanitation operations.
The move, agreed during a high-level planning meeting chaired by Green Nairobi CEC Member Maureen Njeri, brings together key national and county players in what officials say will mark a major turnaround in how the city handles waste, enforcement, and environmental health.
Under the new framework, Climate Worx teams will no longer operate as a standalone initiative.
Instead, they will be absorbed into Nairobi’s existing cleaning system, strengthening daily activities such as street sweeping, drainage unclogging, vegetation control, litter collection, and waste handling.

Officials say the integration is meant to eliminate duplication, boost efficiency, and ensure that clean-up efforts are sustained rather than sporadic.
Supervision has also been tightened at the grassroots. County Commissioners and Deputy County Commissioners will now oversee workforce attendance and chair sub-county implementation meetings every two weeks to monitor progress and deployment.
Operational control will remain with Nairobi City County, while the National Youth Service (NYS) steps in to provide additional on-the-ground supervision, a move expected to inject structure and discipline into daily operations.
To tackle long-standing waste transportation challenges, the county, working with the Nairobi Rivers Commission and NYS, will deploy trucks to ensure timely garbage collection.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, Brigadier Joseph Muracia, noted that sub-county implementation committees have already been constituted to coordinate operations at the local level.
He added that regular coordination meetings both physical and virtual will be held to maintain alignment and enable timely decision-making.
"Sub-county implementation committees are already in place to oversee coordination at the local level, We will convene regular coordination meetings, both physical and virtual, to strengthen collaboration, maintain alignment, and support timely decision-making among all stakeholders"Muracia said.
At the same time, authorities are taking a firm stance against illegal dumping. Each sub-county will establish multi-agency anti-dumping units comprising enforcement officers, National Government Administration Officers, and police. The teams will focus on compliance, routine monitoring, and targeted crackdowns.
The plan signals a clear shift from fragmented clean-up efforts to a unified, citywide system with defined roles and accountability.
For residents, the changes are expected to deliver cleaner streets and neighbourhoods, reduced flooding through improved drainage maintenance, faster garbage collection, and increased enforcement against illegal dumping.
However, officials cautioned that government action alone will not be enough to sustain results. Sub-county teams have been directed to roll out public awareness campaigns to encourage residents to take shared responsibility for keeping the city clean.
Njeri also called for closer collaboration with local leaders and private waste collectors to ensure the programme works effectively at the community level.
Nairobi South County Commissioner Simon Osumba, on his part, urged the adoption of clear, measurable targets to track progress and enhance accountability as the programme rolls out.
With structures now in place at both county and sub-county levels, officials say the success of the initiative will hinge on consistent coordination, strict enforcement, and public cooperation.
