Deceased Sammy Kiprop

Police in Eldoret are investigating the death of a graduate student who was found dead in his house with a stab wound on his neck.

Uasin Gishu county police boss Benjamin Mwanthi said it is not clear if Sammy Kiprop Kowendi was killed or he committed suicide.
Kiprop, (34) was also a tutorial fellow at the University of Eldoret where he was also undertaking his master's degree.
A knife with blood stains was found placed on head with blood oozing from the neck. The body was found on his bed in a rental house near the university.

The victim was a well-known businessman in Mosop constituency where his home is located.
“We are investigating to establish the circumstances of the death. We will follow up to ensure the truth is established,” Mwanthi said.
His family said Kiprop had not complained about any threats his life.
“We are equally shocked because he had not expressed any worries or fears for his life,” a relative said.
The relative said the deceased operated a company which engaged in several businesses including tenders.
Kiprop's body was taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue as investigations commenced.
The death happened even as residents of Eldoret complained about harassment by armed goons especially in residential areas.
Mwanthi  said security patrols have been intensified in all parts of the city.
“We are urging residents of this town to be on the alert and provide information that will help us identify and arrest criminals,” he said.
Residents have also protested after most street lights in the city went off causing darkness in most areas at night.
Traders in the city said they have been forced to close their activities earlier than usual due to fears of insecurity.
Uasin Gishu county secretary Phillip Melly said they had asked Kenya Power to restore the street lights which had been damaged by heavy rains in the region.
Melly said the county was implementing a major solarisation project that would end lighting challenges in the city.
