A 45-year-old man was shot and killed by suspected bandits who crossed into the Turkwel area in Pokot Central, West Pokot County, police said.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 30, but the motive is yet to be known, police said.
The victim, identified as Ywatale Lokworoo, a resident of Kudungole Village in West Pokot, was attacked by a group of suspected bandits believed to have crossed over from Lorogon.
Police said the attackers shot Lokworoo and killed him on the spot before fleeing into a nearby bush. Nothing was reported stolen during the attack.
The incident has stoked tension in the area amid fears of retaliation.
A multi-agency team comprising officers from different formations responded to the scene.
Preliminary investigations established that the victim had sustained gunshot wounds to the head, thorax and chest.
The scene was processed and photographed before the body was moved to Kapenguria Level Five Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
Security officers have launched efforts to trace the suspected attackers, who escaped into the nearby bush.
The area keeps experiencing sporadic attacks from bandits despite ongoing special operations to address the menace caused by illegal weapons.
And Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers recovered an AK-47 rifle and 93 rounds of ammunition following an exchange of fire in Kositei Location, West Pokot County.
The incident occurred on August 30, 2026, at about 11 am during a KDF operation in the area.
The officials recovered an AK-47 rifle alongside 93 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition and four spent cartridges.
The body of a man who was suspected to have been fatally shot during the exchange of fire was also recovered.
The firearm, live ammunition and spent cartridges were taken by the KDF at Kainuk for use as exhibits.
The deceased’s body was moved to the mortuary at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
KDF personnel are among personnel engaged in operations in the area.
Meanwhile, police in Kisumu East launched investigations into the death of a 38-year-old woman whose body was found inside her rented house in Kibos.
Caroline Otieno Omondi was found dead on Sunday morning, August 30, in her one-bedroom house in the Kibos area within Kolua East Sub-location.
Police visited the scene and established that the woman lived with her two sons aged ten and eight.
She returned home at about 9 pm on Saturday after closing her maize-roasting business at Kibos Shopping Centre.
Her sons told investigators that they were awakened during the night by water flowing from the washroom.
When they rushed to turn off the tap, they found their mother lying on the floor next to a broken water bucket.
The boys raised an alarm, attracting neighbours who came to the house but found their mother already dead.
Police said there were no visible physical injuries or marks on the woman’s body.
The woman was a widow whose husband died about two years ago.
The scene was processed by the Crime Scene Investigation team before the body was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination.
