Four rare mountain bongos have started settling into their new habitat at the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.

The four males arrived in the country on Tuesday night through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport aboard a cargo flight operated by KLM from Zoo Dvůr Králové.

The animals had been under specialised care as part of an international breeding programme aimed at safeguarding the species from extinction.

Pictures shared by the Kenya Wildlife Society showed the Bongos calmly adapting to their new environment, feeding and resting under close supervision as they undergo a gradual acclimatisation process.

The high-profile reception at the airport was led by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, alongside Erustus Kanga and Czech Ambassador Nicol Adamcova.

The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy currently hosts a growing herd of 102 bongos and plays a central role in the national breeding and rewilding programme.
