Kenyan entertainer Oga Obinna has caused a stir on social media after sharing a video of his eldest son heading back to school for the second term. The clip, posted to his Instagram account, shows the father and son in a candid moment of parting advice and financial preparation.

The central point of discussion was the pocket money provided. Obinna handed his son KSh 10,000. However, instead of large denominations, the entire amount was comprised of KSh 50 notes.

The Reason Behind the Change

In the video transcript, Obinna explains his decision for the small denominations. He advised his son to use the notes specifically for the canteen. He warned him not to keep the money loosely in his bag.

“Big man, all the best, and this is your pocket money,” Obinna said while handing the cash to the son.

Obinna also chose not to accompany his son to the school gate. He expressed a desire for the boy to be his own man.

He mentioned that his presence often brings "unnecessary attention" and pressure from other parents.

When the son asked what happens if the money runs out, the entertainer was firm. He told him he must "rearrange" himself and that once it is gone, it is gone.

“That’s 10,000 but it has been converted to 50-shilling notes. So, when you will be going to the canteen, you just spend Ksh 50 each time. Will that be enough for you,” he asked him.

Netizens React to the "Dowry" Amount

The post quickly went viral, drawing thousands of comments. Many users were shocked by the sheer volume of the pocket money. Some compared the amount to significant life milestones or adult living expenses.

User @moch_254 remarked that such an amount would have changed their life in school: "Hii ningepewa nikiwa Shule ningeoa nikiwa form 2 hii ni Ruracio baaana.”

Others viewed the money through the lens of adult budgeting. @kenyan_gotti noted the amount is equivalent to "Rent ya comrade the whole semester. Another user, @__mauya, joked that Ksh 10,000 is enough pocket money to last from Form 1 to Form 4.

A Lesson in Fatherhood

While many found humour in the situation, others praised Obinna’s parenting style. The decision to provide small notes was seen by some as a tactical parenting move.

"A true father kwanza hizo 50 ni idea poa sana," commented @_daktar.i.

The post also served as motivation for some followers. @vict0rheis_ wrote, "As men, we should work hard to afford such lifestyle for our kids."

@flex_fridgemagnets suggested they would use the money to run for a political seat in the village. @shuksha_roble279 joked that musician Bahati might now give his son 100k to compete.

Despite the light-hearted banter, some users raised "security" concerns for the boy. @mainaaxl joked that a Form 4 student with a hidden phone in the dormitory might have already seen the viral clip and noted the student's admission number.
