As the National Super League promotion battle enters the homestretch, Mombasa United assistant coach Hamad Said is confident the team will qualify for the top-tier league.

Said said they will take their remaining eight games as finals. “When we started this project, our target was to qualify for the SportPesa League. As the league enters the crucial stage, I’m confident we shall achieve our target,” said the coach.

He added: “We want to keep the winning momentum and get maximum points from our remaining games.” Speaking after Sunday’s 1-0 win against Gucha Stars at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, he said he was happy with the win. Captain Peter Mbuya scored the vital goal in the second half after a goalmouth melee.

“Gucha Stars is very good. They played well and gave us a run for our money. Luck was on our side today,” noted Said. His Gucha Stars counterpart, Sammy Okoth: “To be honest, we dominated this game, but we were not lucky at all. We created chances but did not score; they got one chance and scored, but that’s football.”

At the same time, Mombasa United is set to unveil former Shabana head coach Peter Okidi as their coach. He will take over from veteran coach Gilbert Selebwa, who was sacked two weeks ago. Okidi was with the team at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, during their game against Gucha Stars.

He, however, watched the game from the stands. His first game in charge will be against league leaders Migori Youth on Saturday at Mombasa Sports Club. Meanwhile, Migori Youth maintained their lead at the top of the NSL log following a 4-0 win against Nzoia Sugar.

Migori Youth lead the log with 64 points, the same as second-placed Mombasa United. However, Migori Youth have a better goal difference. Equity Bank FC is third with 57 points.

On Sunday, the Bankers thrashed bottom of the log Vihiga United 4-0. Embu-based 3K FC remains fourth with 56 points. The Nicodemus Omasete-coached side has a game at hand against Fortune Sacco.

At the bottom end of the table, Kabati Youth, Mwatate United, Mully Children’s Family (MCF) and former FKF Premier League side Vihiga United are facing relegation.
