In a public notice issued on Wednesday, the corporation said the move is aimed at ensuring smooth ticketing, security checks and boarding as poor weather continues to disrupt movement in several parts of the country.
The advisory comes as heavy rains continue to affect transport and movement across the country, causing flooding, traffic snarl-ups and delays on major roads, especially in urban centres.
Kenya Railways said passengers should plan their journeys early to avoid missing trains, noting that departures will remain strictly on schedule despite the weather challenges.
“Due to the ongoing heavy rains and traffic snarl-ups, passengers are advised to arrive at their departure station at least one hour before the departure time indicated on their ticket,” the notice said.
The corporation said early arrival would help reduce congestion at stations and allow travellers enough time to complete pre-boarding procedures without inconvenience.
“This will ensure a smooth and seamless experience during ticketing, security checks and boarding,” it said.
Kenya Railways further emphasised that trains would not wait for late passengers and urged travellers to observe the timelines indicated on their tickets.
“Kindly note that trains will depart strictly as scheduled,” the notice added.
The Madaraka Express is a key mode of transport for passengers travelling between Nairobi and Mombasa, as well as on the Nairobi-Naivasha route, particularly during periods of bad weather when road travel becomes more difficult.
Heavy rains being experienced in many parts of the country have led to increased caution from transport operators and government agencies, with flood warnings issued in several counties.
The government has warned residents in flood-prone areas, particularly in Tana River, Garissa and parts of Nairobi, to remain vigilant as water levels continue to rise in rivers and dams.
Transport disruptions have also been reported in several areas where roads have been submerged or rendered impassable by flooding.
Kenya Railways said it remains committed to improving service efficiency and punctuality despite the seasonal challenges and asked passengers to cooperate with station officials.
The corporation urged travellers seeking further clarification to use its official communication channels, including customer care phone lines, email and social media platforms.
The advisory will remain in place as long as the heavy rains and traffic disruptions continue to affect passenger movement to railway stations.
