Nairobi is set to host a major global agriculture gathering, with about 1,000 participants expected for the World Farmers’ Organization (WFO) General Assembly scheduled for June 8–11, 2026.
The event, which will be held in Kenya for the first time and marks only the fourth time it is taking place in Africa, is expected to bring together farmers, policymakers, private sector players, innovators, academia and exhibitors from across the world.
Organisers say the meeting will focus on strengthening collaboration across the agricultural value chain and advancing solutions that support farmers both locally and globally.
The summit will be jointly hosted by the Kenya National Farmers’ Federation (KENAFF) and the World Farmers’ Organization (WFO).
KENAFF Chief Executive Officer Dr Mwenda Mailutha described the event as a significant milestone for Kenya’s agriculture sector.
“We are honored to be the local host for this flagship event for the global farming fraternity. As the bridge between our farmers and policy makers, as well as connecting Kenyan farmers with the global farming fraternity, KENAFF will be keen to showcase various projects that have been deployed to empower the Kenyan farmer and promote inclusivity within the agricultural sector to ensure that no farmer is left behind,” he said.
Speaking during a media briefing on preparations for the assembly, Dr Mailutha said KENAFF has rolled out several initiatives aimed at accelerating digital and innovative farming practices.
He noted that the projects also focus on promoting sustainable agriculture, particularly targeting youth, women and other special interest groups.
Preparations for the high-profile event are being coordinated by a Local Organising Committee (LOC), which brings together representatives from the public, private and civil society sectors.
The committee is tasked with overseeing planning and coordination among stakeholders involved in the summit.
LOC Chairman Hon. L. Nduati Kariuki said hosting the global meeting presents a strategic opportunity for Kenya.
“With Kenya hosting this kind of global gathering for the first time, we expect that this event will position the country as a strategic hub for agriculture on the global stage. We are working with various stakeholders including government ministries and departments to ensure overall success of the event,” he said.
KENAFF National Chairman Prof. Kaburu M’Ribu said the meeting aligns with the government’s broader agenda to strengthen the agricultural sector as a driver of economic growth.
“KENAFF is alive to the national economic transformation agenda and the role that agriculture and food security play in the attainment of our country’s aspiration for economic transformation. We look forward to progressive resolutions of the WFO Annual Meeting that will accelerate the attainment of a better environment for our farmers, both in Kenya and at the global level,” he said.
The four-day assembly is expected to place Kenya at the centre of global discussions on agriculture, innovation and food security.
