Head coach Charles Akonnor acknowledged the concerns but struck a defiant tone, insisting his side is ready to respond when it matters most.
“We are fully aware that our recent performances in front of goal have not met the standards we demand of ourselves, but this is exactly the kind of moment that defines great teams,” said Akonnor.
“A derby of this magnitude demands courage, precision, and a ruthless edge, and we are working tirelessly to ensure we rediscover that cutting instinct.”
Akonnor also stressed the importance of emotional control and structure in a fixture often defined by intensity.
“In matches like this, emotions can easily take over, but we must remain structured and focused throughout,” he said. “One lapse, one moment of hesitation, can change everything.”
Despite the recent struggles, Gor Mahia captain Alpha Onyango expressed unwavering belief in the squad’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“This is not just another match for us—it is a test of our character and ambition,” Onyango said. “We have built our position at the top through hard work and consistency, and now we must defend it with everything we have.”
Onyango also pointed to the 1–0 defeat to Leopards in December as added motivation heading into the derby.
“That loss has stayed with us, and it serves as a reminder of what is required in this fixture,” he noted. “We owe our supporters a response, and we are determined to deliver it.”
He added that experience within the squad could prove decisive in handling the pressure.
“Many of us understand what this derby demands. It is about staying calm, executing the plan, and taking our moments.”
AFC Leopards arrive with renewed determination despite a heavy 3–0 defeat to Kenya Police in their last outing. Prior to that setback, Ingwe had strung together four consecutive wins, highlighting their defensive organisation and improved efficiency in front of goal.
Midfielder Musa Oundo underlined the significance of the fixture in shaping the title race.
“This is the kind of match every player dreams of because it carries both pride and consequence,” he said. “We know what is at stake, and we are ready to give everything.”
Head coach Fred Ambani echoed that confidence, insisting his side will not be overwhelmed by the occasion.
“We respect Gor Mahia, but respect does not mean fear,” Ambani said. “We believe in our structure, our discipline, and our ability to compete at this level.”
Ambani also highlighted tactical discipline as a key factor in such high-pressure matches.
“This derby will be decided by focus, execution, and the ability to take chances when they come.”
Historically, Gor Mahia hold a slight edge in the rivalry, with 34 wins from 98 meetings compared to Leopards’ 29, while 35 matches have ended in draws. The record reflects a fiercely contested fixture where dominance is never guaranteed and margins remain consistently tight.
As anticipation builds, Nyayo Stadium is set for another charged afternoon. For Gor Mahia, victory would strengthen their grip on the title race. For AFC Leopards, it offers a chance to overtake their rivals and shift the momentum at the summit.
