
A five-year-old girl drowned in an uncovered well in Akala, Gem, Siaya County.
The incident, which occurred on April 22 in the Kanyadet area, left a family devastated, police who visited the scene said. Police said the minor was playing with her friends when she drowned.
The body was later retrieved and moved to the mortuary for autopsy, police said.
The case was among four drowning incidents reported on Wednesday alone.
In Muthetheni area, Machakos, a Form Three student at Ngamba Secondary School, drowned in Yondoni River while on a swimming expedition. The body was retrieved and moved to a local mortuary for autopsy.
In Kitui’s Kalivu area, one Kanini, Kimeu Kiminza, 36, drowned in a dam along Nguni River, police said. The body was discovered by villagers while fetching water at the same dam.
Police officers visited the scene and, with assistance from members of the public, retrieved the body, which had no physical injuries, and moved it to the mortuary for autopsy.
More than 130 people have, in the past three months, been killed in separate drowning incidents linked to flooding. The floods have also displaced dozens of others, officials said, amid efforts to address the situation.
The Meteorological Department has warned of more rainfall in several parts of the country in the coming days.
In Kasarani area, Nairobi, the body of a man was found floating in a river in Ruaraka. He was later identified as Amos Omango. It is not clear how he died, police said, as the body was moved to the mortuary for autopsy.
In Ngarengiro, Laikipia County, an 11-year-old girl drowned in River Nanyuki. The body was retrieved and moved to the mortuary for an autopsy. Police said they are investigating how the girl drowned.
In a separate incident, a 12-year-old boy was admitted to hospital after a snake bite in Moyale, Marsabit County. The boy was taking care of goats in the Somare area when he was bitten on the leg.
He was rushed to hospital and admitted in stable condition, officials said, as efforts continue to locate the snake.
