Elderly man dies in Embu house fire

Detectives are investigating an incident in which a 93-year-old man died in a fire in the Manyatta area of Embu County.

The incident occurred on April 22 in Itithe village and involved one Joseph Njagi, police said.

He was asleep in his house when the fire broke out. Police said his body was burnt beyond recognition.

The house, which was made of timber, is believed to have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Police said the man was alone at the time of the incident.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending further procedures.

Elsewhere in the Gaitu area of Meru County, a miner was killed in a quarry accident. Police said Alex Ngentu was excavating stones for construction when the quarry walls collapsed and trapped him.

Police said the victim sustained head injuries. The body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.

In Nyamira North Sub-county, police are investigating a murder incident that occurred in Gekonge Village, about four kilometres northwest of Magwagwa Police Station.

According to police, the deceased, Robinson Nyangau Ongori, 52, had allegedly picked a quarrel with his wife and son.

The dispute reportedly escalated, resulting in Ongori sustaining a deep cut to the back of the head before he was allegedly set on fire.

Authorities have identified the suspects as his wife and their 18-year-old son.

The scene was processed and documented by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers, and the two suspects were arrested and taken to Ekerenyo Police Station as investigations continue. Police said they are likely to face murder charges.

Meanwhile, train operations along the Gilgil–Naivasha railway line were briefly disrupted after a locomotive struck a herd of cattle crossing a railway bridge.

According to police, the incident occurred on April 22, 2026, at about 12:42 p.m. between Gilgil and Naivasha.

The train hit four cattle that were crossing the railway bridge. Three of the animals died on the spot, while one survived with injuries.

The train was forced to halt operations for about 38 minutes as the situation was addressed. Police responded to the scene, and necessary procedures were carried out before the train resumed its journey.
