Modern two-storey facility at Gikoe Market, now 98 per cent complete/ HANDOUT

More than 200 traders in Mathioya Constituency are on the brink of a major boost as the government moves to complete the Gikoe Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Murang’a County.

The project, now 98 per cent complete, is set to transform the working conditions of small-scale entrepreneurs who have long operated in informal roadside spaces, offering them a safer and more structured business environment.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the development underscores the government’s push to uplift informal traders under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

“The Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda is anchored on improving the working conditions and living standards of ordinary Kenyans, especially those in the informal sector,” said Dr Omollo.

“The near completion of the Gikoe ESP Market demonstrates our commitment to creating structured and supportive environments where traders can thrive,” he added.

The modern two-storey facility is designed to accommodate about 220 traders and is expected to offer a more efficient and secure alternative for doing business once operational.

Key features of the market include cold storage facilities to help preserve farm produce and cut post-harvest losses—a persistent challenge for farmers and traders in Murang’a and beyond.

The market also integrates social and economic support amenities such as table banking rooms for women’s groups, an ICT hub to promote digital access, and a breastfeeding room to cater to nursing mothers.

Other facilities include modern stalls, dry storage areas, a kitchen, a social hall, and improved sanitation amenities aimed at enhancing comfort for both traders and customers.

Dr Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is working closely with local administrators to ensure a smooth transition for traders once the facility opens.

“Our role is to ensure security and orderly operations so that traders can move into the facility seamlessly and begin benefiting immediately,” he said.

The Gikoe ESP Market is expected to inject new life into the local economy, empower small-scale traders, and drive community development as the government rolls out BETA-aligned projects across the country.
