Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu dons Agikuyu traditional attire in the Senate /HANDOUTNominated Senator Karen Nyamu has explained the significance of her coronation as a Nyakinyua elder, describing it as a personal honour and a call to greater public service.
Nyamu said her coronation as patron of the Mumbi Nyakinyua Nathengira Nairobi Chapter was conducted in line with the traditions of the Agikuyu community.
Speaking in the Senate, she said her new role goes beyond personal recognition, linking it to her legislative duties.
“I rise pursuant to Standing Order 58 to make a statement regarding my coronation as the patron of the Mumbi Nyakinyua Nathengira Nairobi Chapter. The coronation, which is conducted according to the traditions of the Agikuyu community, was a great honour for me. It recognises my role as a woman leader and a custodian of our people’s values,” she said.
“I am not just sharing this as a personal achievement, but also to demonstrate how our traditional leadership connects with our work in this House.”
The nominated senator said becoming a Nyakinyua comes with significant responsibility, requiring her to uphold the values of honesty, wisdom, and selflessness.
“A Nyakinyua is a respected woman in the Agikuyu community, chosen after careful consideration of her character, her family life, and her ability to guide others. She is a peacemaker and a source of wisdom, helping to resolve conflicts and protect the community,” she explained.

Nyamu said the role is rooted in longstanding indigenous governance systems that predate modern institutions.
She also highlighted her representation of Nairobi’s diverse population, noting that her leadership must reflect inclusivity.
“This role is not new. It is part of a system of leadership that existed long before this Senate, guided by fairness, unity and care for others,” she said.
“I am part of the Nairobi City County delegation, representing a city made up of many communities and diverse people. A vibrant city full of opportunity.”
