Kenya Railways is set to roll out a new parcel delivery service that will enable same-day transportation of goods between Nairobi and Mombasa counties.
Dubbed the Parcel Service, the offering promises fast, secure, and reliable delivery by leveraging the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which has primarily been used for passenger and bulk cargo transport.
The move is expected to tap into the growing demand for efficient logistics solutions, particularly among small businesses and e-commerce players seeking quicker turnaround times between the capital and the coastal city.
Kenya Railways said the service will prioritise speed and safety, positioning rail as a competitive alternative to road-based courier services that often face delays due to traffic congestion and other logistical challenges.
The introduction of same-day parcel delivery could also ease pressure on highways, reduce transport costs and enhance trade efficiency along the Nairobi–Mombasa corridor.
Details on pricing, scheduling and operational timelines are yet to be announced, with the corporation urging customers to stay tuned for the official launch.
On January 28, Kenya Railways announced the rollout of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Bus Service.
The new last-mile connector is designed to move passengers between stations and major commercial hubs across the capital.
The agency best known for operating metropolitan rail corridors is packaging the bus service as a smoother alternative to traffic congestion.
“Nairobi traffic? We’ve got a smoother plan,” Kenya Railways said in a statement.
The network links rail stops to destinations including Yaya, Westlands, Upper Hill, Embakasi Station and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Kenya Railways said the launch seeks to complete the first-mile/last-mile puzzle for commuters who previously relied on road-based public transport or private vehicles to bridge the gap between stations and workplaces.
The state corporation, which falls under the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, was established in 1978 under the Kenya Railways Corporation Act (Cap 397).
Kenya Railways currently manages a railway system that consists of a single-track main line running from the coastal city of Mombasa to the border town of Malaba.
In its renewed outlook, the corporation says its core mandate is to provide efficient and effective rail and inland waterways transport services, while supporting the broader national development agenda.
The agency has also reiterated its long-term vision of becoming a provider of world-class rail services, anchored on safety, reliability and sustainability.
As part of its mission, Kenya Railways seeks to upgrade and develop an integrated rail network capable of meeting growing demand for passenger and freight transport.
Key focus areas include building technical capacity within the railway sector, improving service delivery, leveraging existing assets to grow revenue streams, and facilitating the development of both national and metropolitan rail networks.
