A suspected thief was shot and wounded after he allegedly slashed and injured a police officer in Kibera slums, Nairobi, police said.

Nairobi police commander Issa Mohamud said the victim and the police officer were both admitted to hospital following the Friday dawn drama.

According to Mohamud, two police officers were on undercover patrols along Lindi Road in the area when a group of about six men attacked them.

One of the men reportedly drew a panga and slashed one of the cops on the left hand, which prompted a scuffle, police said.

It was then that the officer drew his pistol and shot the said assailant in the left ankle.
