Kenyan boxing Portifas Odipo alias Majembe / HANDOUT

Kenyan boxing sensation Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, has revealed he was robbed during his homecoming event in Kisumu, blaming poor security and disorganisation.

Majembe said he lost his newly won iPhone 17 during a heated homecoming celebration in Kisumu, just days after his boxing victory.

The amateur boxer said the device, part of his fight winnings, was allegedly stolen amid the crowds that turned up to celebrate him

Speaking after the incident, the boxer expressed disappointment, saying what began as a celebratory return to his roots turned chaotic and ended on a sour note.

“I’m still hustling; my parents do not have a good life;they also want a better life. I’m still struggling to find a better life, and then you come and destroy my brand,” he said.

Majembe said security arrangements failed to control the crowds, leading to theft and confusion during the event. He added that he was also briefly arrested during the chaos but was later released.

“Security was bad. People learn from mistakes. The security let me down.I thought you were my people. It hurt bad. I was also arrested, and I was able to get out of the station,” he said.

The boxer noted that several brands that had partnered with him for the event were also affected by the theft.

“There were brands who showed up, but they also stole from them,” he said, while apologising to fans and partners for the disorganisation.

Despite the ordeal, Majembe thanked Kisumu residents who turned up in large numbers to him, recalling the warm reception he received upon arrival.

“I was happy when the residents picked me up from the airport, and they were jovial. It started well but ended badly for me,” he said.

He maintained that he still holds no grudge against the locals and promised to return in future under better arrangements.

“I love Kisumu residents either way. I will be back to Kisumu,” he said.

Majembe secured a knockout victory during the headline bout of Vurugu Fight Night on Saturday.

Speaking after the win, Majembe acknowledged the challenge posed by his rival while maintaining his dominance in the ring.

The bout, which drew significant attention, saw Majembe overpower Mbavu Destroyer before sealing the victory with a knockout, cementing his status as one of the standout fighters on the local boxing scene.

“Mbavu the Brand, I told you, you will kneel for me. But you did well. I thank you, Mbavu the Brand, for showing up, because fighting me in the ring is always hard, but you represented well,” Majembe said.

Despite the loss, Mbavu Destroyer earned praise for his resilience in a contest that lived up to expectations.

The much-hyped clash, held on April 4 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, lived up to expectations as Majembe overpowered his opponent in a decisive knockout, bringing to an end a rivalry that had captivated fans across the country.

Majembe walked away with a lucrative prize package that included more than Sh2.5 million in total winnings, the Vurugu Championship Belt, Sh1 million in cash, a brand new Toyota Noah provided by betting firm Odi Bets, a Taro GP1 sport bike valued at Sh385,000, and a one-year gym membership.

What began as a social media feud on TikTok between two young men from modest backgrounds had, by fight night, transformed into a nationally followed spectacle drawing attention from political leaders, corporates, and thousands of fans.

President William Ruto was among those who backed the event, pledging Sh1 million each to both fighters to support their training ahead of the bout.
