The four suspects during a coordinated multi-agency raid conducted within Embu Township/HANDOUT

Four suspects have been arrested and 549 rolls of cannabis sativa recovered following a police operation in Embu County, in what authorities say is part of an intensified crackdown on drug trafficking networks.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the suspects were apprehended during a coordinated multi-agency raid conducted within Embu Township.

The four were later escorted to Embu Police Station, where they remain in custody pending arraignment.

“The suspects were arrested during a targeted operation on a premises believed to be a drug den. All have been placed in lawful custody as investigations continue,” the NPS said.

According to police, officers executed the raid following intelligence reports, leading to the arrest of the suspects inside the house.

A subsequent search of the premises yielded 549 rolls of cannabis sativa, alongside a metallic container suspected to be a grinder used in processing the narcotic.

“A thorough search of the house led to the recovery of several exhibits, including 549 rolls of cannabis sativa and equipment believed to be used in its preparation,” the statement added.

All recovered items have since been secured and documented as exhibits to support ongoing investigations and future prosecution.

Authorities said the operation highlights sustained efforts by security agencies to dismantle drug networks in the region.

“This operation underscores the continuity and consistency of multi-agency interventions aimed at addressing drug-related offences in Embu County,” the NPS noted, adding that similar crackdowns will continue across the country.

The Embu arrests come barely a day after another drug-related incident in Teso North Sub-County, where officers from Malaba Police Station recovered suspected narcotics during a routine patrol along the Malaba–Uganda Road.

Police said officers encountered a suspicious individual carrying two black bags, who fled upon noticing law enforcement, abandoning the luggage. A search of the bags led to the recovery of 19 packages of suspected cannabis sativa.

“The exhibits have been secured, and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect who fled the scene,” police said.

The back-to-back incidents come amid growing concern over rising drug abuse in the country. Lawmakers have recently raised alarm over what they describe as a looming crisis, warning that Kenya risks losing a generation of young people to substance abuse.

During a recent session at Bunge Towers, members of the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security questioned the effectiveness of current anti-drug strategies.

Led by Saku MP Dido Ali Rasso, the committee challenged security agencies to strengthen enforcement and ensure that interventions are backed by solid legal frameworks.

Officials from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), and the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) were present during the session, where they outlined ongoing efforts to curb the vice.
