Detectives in Masinga, Machakos County, have launched investigations after human remains believed to be those of a woman were discovered in a well at Mukengesya village.
The remains were discovered on Monday when a farmhand clearing a farm near the Mukengesya River opened a well and noticed a foul smell.
On checking inside, he saw one large sack and three smaller sacks floating in the water.
Police visited the scene in Thatha Sub-Location, Kithyoko Location, where they said the well was about 10 feet in diameter. It had been secured with an iron lid, although the padlock was found broken.
The four sacks were retrieved and opened, revealing human body parts, alongside stones.
Machakos police boss Monica Kimani said investigators could not establish when the woman died or when the remains were dumped in the well.
The scene was processed and documented by investigators before the remains were moved to Machakos Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
In a separate incident, police in Mbeere North, Embu County, have also launched investigations into the death of an 80-year-old woman who police said may have been assaulted.
The deceased, Felista Ngithi Mbuko, a resident of Kiarwarwa Village in Muchonoke Sub-Location, was reportedly found with serious injuries.
Family members rushed her to Muchonoke Dispensary after the incident, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The woman’s body was found with multiple injuries to the back of the head, chest, arms and neck.
The remains were moved to Gakwegori Private Mortuary, where they are being preserved pending an autopsy.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and seeking to establish who was involved and what led to the incident.
In another case, police in Narok have launched a manhunt for three people following the death of a man reportedly attacked and seriously injured in the Olokurto area.
Joseph Njogu died at a hospital after sustaining deep cuts to his forehead and right hand following the incident reported on Monday, August 31, 2026.
A witness said he found Njogu bleeding from the forehead and left hand. The witness said Njogu told him that he had been attacked by three men.
The witness mobilised assistance and rushed Njogu to a local hospital for treatment, but Njogu later died from his injuries.
Police officers who visited the scene said Njogu had sustained deep cuts to the forehead and right hand.
The scene was processed as detectives commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police said efforts were underway to locate the three people, who had not been apprehended at the time.
Njogu’s body was awaiting removal to Narok Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and a postmortem examination.
