Dr Elyas Abdi Jillaow, Director General of the State Department for Basic Education gives his remarks at the 1st KEMI International Conference 2026 in Nairobi/HANDOUTLeadership has been identified as the defining force behind a sustainable and future-ready education system, as stakeholders gathered for the 1st KEMI International Conference 2026 in Nairobi.
Speaking during the high-profile event at Safari Park Hotel, Director General at the State Department for Basic Education, Dr Elyas Abdi Jillaow, declared that the era of passive school administration is over.
Representing Principal Secretary Prof Julius K. Bitok, Jillaow called for a decisive shift toward dynamic, instructional leadership aligned with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
“The era of static administration in our schools is over,” Jillaow said. “We are here to bridge the gap between research and policy, ensuring governance mechanisms promote equity and climate-responsive learning. By reinventing how we lead, we ensure no child is left behind in a digital, rapidly changing world. Kenya is proud to lead this global discourse on educational excellence.”
The conference, organised by the Kenya Education Management Institute, has attracted more than 3,500 participants from 14 countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Rwanda, positioning Kenya as a hub for global education reform dialogue.
Amid policy discussions and global perspectives, Machakos Hospitality and Technical Institute emerged as a standout example of how theory can translate into real-world success. The institution showcased its model of vocational excellence, aligning closely with the conference theme, “Catalysts for Transformation.”
Director Geoffrey Makau emphasized that technical and vocational training plays a central role in economic development and sustainable education systems.
“For an education ecosystem to be truly sustainable, it must prioritise hands-on empowerment,” Makau told delegates. “Technical proficiency is the backbone of regional transformation.”

MHTI’s impact was evident through its strong academic performance and industry integration. The institute has consistently produced top-performing students in national examinations administered by the Kenya National Examinations Council, while maintaining a focus on discipline and modern training facilities.
A key highlight of its success is its partnership with leading hospitality establishments such as Gelian Hotel and Semara Hotel. These collaborations have enabled students to gain hands-on industry experience, with at least 11 graduates securing permanent employment. Several have gone on to earn “Employee of the Quarter” recognition, underscoring the quality of training provided.
Ben Katungi, General Manager of Gelian Hotel and a key exhibitor at the conference, highlighted the role of hospitality in fostering innovation and leadership.
“Professional hospitality services foster the environment where innovation and transformative dialogue can thrive,” Katungi said. “Excellence in service is foundational to building institutions that support growth and collaboration.”
As discussions continue, the conference is expected to shape policy directions and strengthen collaboration between governments, institutions, and industry players.
