A section of bidders during the site visits of JKIA on April 9, 2026/KAAThe ambitious plan to transform Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) into a world-class aviation hub gathered momentum today, following a successful pre-bid site visit that offered prospective investors a closer look at the scale of the project.
The visit, held a day after the pre-bid conference, brought together bidders seeking to participate in the design, development and modernisation of Kenya’s busiest airport.
The exercise provided a rare, detailed, on-the-ground perspective of the infrastructure earmarked for overhaul and expansion.
Guided by project consultants DAR Al-Handasah Consultants, participants were taken through critical components of the airport’s operations, gaining technical insights into both airside and landside facilities.
The tour covered strategic airside areas, including the proposed location for a new terminal building, runway 06/24, aprons 1, 2 and 3 and taxiways A through M, key arteries that support aircraft movement and operational efficiency.
Bidders also inspected essential infrastructure such as fire stations, airside power stations and meteorological units that ensure safety and continuity of operations.
On the landside, attention shifted to passenger-facing facilities, with guided visits across terminals 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, 1E and Terminal 2.
Bidders assessed passenger lounges, baggage handling systems, power substations, water storage systems, parking areas, access roads and screening zones, elements central to improving traveller experience.
Officials said the site visit was designed to give bidders a comprehensive understanding of the airport’s current capacity and future needs.
“This pre-bid site visit is a critical step in ensuring that all prospective partners fully understand the scope and technical requirements of this transformative project,” an official involved in the process said.
“It allows bidders to align their proposals with the realities on the ground.”
Another project insider noted that the engagement would strengthen the quality of submissions.
“By experiencing the operational environment first-hand, bidders are better placed to develop innovative and practical solutions that match Kenya’s aviation ambitions,” the official said.
The modernisation of JKIA is expected to significantly expand passenger capacity, streamline operations and elevate service standards, positioning Nairobi as a competitive regional aviation hub.
“The goal is to deliver a facility that meets international standards while supporting future growth in passenger and cargo traffic,” a Kenya Airports Authority representative said. “This project is not just about infrastructure, it is about unlocking economic opportunities for the country.”
Once complete, the upgraded airport is expected to enhance connectivity, attract investment and reinforce Kenya’s standing as a gateway to Africa.
KAA officials reiterated their commitment to a transparent and competitive procurement process, expressing confidence that the modernisation effort will deliver a facility capable of meeting growing demand while offering a seamless travel experience.
