Indian Naval Ship Trikand visits Mombasa/HANDOUT

Indian Naval Ship (INS) Trikand, a frontline guided-missile frigate, is on a port call at Mombasa Port, Kenya, from April 7 to 10 as part of its operational deployment in the Western Indian Ocean Region.

The visit is part of India’s MAHASAGAR vision, which aims at “Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions,” highlighting India’s commitment to maritime partnerships with African nations.

During the visit, the Indian Navy handed over 100 INSAS rifles and 50,000 rounds of ammunition to the Kenya Defence Forces.

In addition, a Quick Impact Project (QIP) agreement was signed to provide a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine to the Kenyan military, marking a significant milestone in bilateral defence cooperation.

Vice Admiral K. Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of India’s Western Naval Command, and Dr. Adarsh Swaika, High Commissioner of India to Kenya, met General Charles Kahariri, Chief of the Defence Forces of Kenya, in Nairobi.

The officials discussed ways to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation, focusing on “capacity building, training exchanges, and enhancing institutional linkages.”

They also held talks with Patrick Mariru, Principal Secretary for Defence, reviewing the growing India–Kenya partnership through regular high-level visits and institutional dialogues.

In Mombasa, Vice Admiral Swaminathan met Major General Paul Otieno, Commander of the Kenya Navy, to explore “strengthening maritime cooperation, training exchanges, and avenues for enhanced collaboration in the Western Indian Ocean Region.”

The discussions are part of ongoing efforts to increase operational interoperability between the two navies.

The visit includes a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) between INS Trikand and a Kenya Navy ship, underscoring mutual trust and operational coordination.

The ship’s crew is also participating in professional exchanges with the Kenya Navy to share best practices and enhance skills.

A Deck Reception on INS Trikand brought together senior Kenyan officials, including Major General Otieno as Chief Guest, the Deputy Governors of Kilifi and Taita Taveta, representatives of the Kenya Navy, members of the diplomatic corps, and prominent members of the Indian diaspora.

The event celebrated the long-standing maritime and cultural ties between India and Kenya while reaffirming a shared commitment to “regional peace, stability, and security.”

The visit of INS Trikand demonstrates the growing depth of India–Kenya relations in the maritime domain. It reflects a shared vision for a secure, stable, and prosperous Western Indian Ocean Region and reinforces both nations’ commitment to strengthening defence and diplomatic partnerships.
