Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi hospitalised/HANDOUT

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has condemned the attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu and announced that investigations into the incident have been launched.

In a statement on Wednesday, the DCI described the assault as “brazen and cowardly” and said detectives are actively pursuing crucial leads.

“We strongly condemn the brazen and cowardly attack on Vihiga Senator Hon. Godfrey Osotsi that occurred in Kisumu,” DCI said.

The DCI added that the motive behind the attack has not yet been established, but forensic analysis of CCTV footage from the scene is already underway.

“At this stage, the motive behind the attack has not been established. Our detectives are actively pursuing very crucial leads following a detailed forensic analysis of the available CCTV footage,” the statement read.

DCI urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation as investigations continue.

“We urge members of the public to remain calm, refrain from speculation and allow investigations to proceed without interference,” the DCI said, adding that it is committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.

The statement follows reports that Osotsi was attacked earlier in the day by a group of armed individuals while in Kisumu.

According to his aide, the senator had gone for a routine grooming visit before proceeding to a restaurant, where he interacted with members of the public for about 30 minutes.

It was during this time that a group of gun-wielding men reportedly confronted him, questioning his political stance and demanding to know why he was associated with the ‘one-term’ brigade, before allegedly assaulting him.

Sources indicated that his security detail exercised restraint during the incident to avoid discharging firearms in a public setting.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna confirmed the attack, saying he had spoken to Osotsi’s team.

“I have spoken to Senator Osotsi’s team and confirmed that he was viciously attacked and injured in Kisumu earlier today when he went to get a haircut,” Sifuna said.

He added that the senator had been airlifted to Nairobi for treatment and called for swift police action.

“I strongly condemn this attack and ask the police for immediate action on those responsible,” he said.

Siaya Governor James Orengo also condemned the incident, terming it a coordinated act of intimidation and linking it to what he described as a broader pattern of politically motivated violence.

“This is a clearly coordinated pattern of intimidation aimed at silencing the voices of the people,” Orengo said.

He called for the immediate release of CCTV footage to aid investigations and warned against attempts to incite ethnic tensions.

Meanwhile, Osotsi’s office termed the attack “barbaric and cowardly” and urged the National Police Service to act with urgency.

“The availability of CCTV surveillance provides a critical starting point for identifying and apprehending those responsible,” his office said.

The DCI said it will keep the public informed as investigations progress.
