The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry has rolled out a week-long tree-growing programme in which Cabinet Secretaries will lead tree planting and wetland restoration activities under the Accelerated Tree Growing Programme.

The schedule, issued by the Kenya Forest Service, outlines activities running from April 6 to April 10, 2026, across forests and wetlands in more than 15 counties.

On Monday, Attorney General Dorcas Agik Odour oversaw activities at Olomolelian and Enkongu Ejoore in the Maparasha wetlands, as well as Ngong Hills Forest in Kajiado County.

On Tuesday, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba led tree-growing and wetland restoration activities in Trans Nzoia and Migori counties.

The sites included Wamuini Wetland, Nyora Kabuto and Kangeso wetlands, as well as Kapolet, Sossio and Saboti forests, and Migori Forest.

Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho is scheduled to spearhead activities on Wednesday in coastal counties, with a focus on mangrove restoration and forest conservation.

In Mombasa County, he will lead the programme at Dongo Kundu mangroves. In Tana River County, activities will take place at Kipini, Ozi and Tana Delta mangroves.

In Kwale County, restoration efforts will cover Buda Forest, Vanga, Majoreni, Bodo, Shimoni, Mwache and Mkongani mangroves, as well as Shiraz, Dzombo, Mwaluganje, Mtsangatamu and Bonje forests. Additional activities will be held at Pongwe, Kiteje and Tsunza mangroves.

In Lamu County, the programme will cover Witu Forest Station, Lamu Forest Station, Southern Swamp Block and Pate Island Swamp Block, the ministry said.

Also on Wednesday, Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome will oversee restoration activities at Kiunyu Dam in Nyeri County, Lake Jipe Wetland in Taita Taveta County, Narumoru and Githwariga wetlands in Nyeri County, and Manguo Wetland and Mukogondo Forest in Laikipia County.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano will on Thursday lead activities at Lake Olbolosat in Nyandarua County, Ngomano and Itikoni wetlands in Kitui County, and the Muumoni catchment forest.

On Friday, Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi will conclude the week’s activities at Tinosoyiet and Kijje wetlands in Kericho County, Kiera Forest in Tharaka Nithi County, and several forest blocks in Meru County, including Lower Imenti, Mucheene, Marania and Ruthumbi.

He will also preside over tree-growing activities at Suam Forest in Trans Nzoia County.

The Accelerated Tree Growing Programme is part of the government’s broader environmental conservation agenda aimed at increasing national tree cover and restoring degraded wetlands and water towers.

By assigning specific wetlands and forests to Cabinet Secretaries, the ministry says it seeks to enhance accountability, visibility and coordination in the national tree-growing campaign.

The week-long exercise is expected to mobilise local communities, county officials and environmental stakeholders to support conservation efforts and strengthen climate resilience across the country.
