Gospel icon DJ Krowbar, born Karumba Ngatia, recently marked his first birthday since the passing of his beloved wife, Joyce Wanjiru Karumba. The occasion was defined by a poignant reflection on a mantra that Joyce shared with him every year during their marriage.
A Gift of Remembrance
During a recent church service, members of Krowbar’s E-group, known as ZINDUA, presented the DJ with a unique piece of commemorative art. The gift was designed by one of Joyce’s close friends, Grace, who operates under the handle @idea.jabali.
The artwork features a central message that holds deep personal significance for the family. It reads: "THIS IS GOING TO BE OUR BEST YEAR YET!"

This specific phrase was one Joyce used to tell Krowbar every single year of their life together.
"What a thoughtful gift, a line my wife told me every single year surrounded by the African fabric we chose to adorn her with,” Krowbar reflected.
Symbolism in Fabric
The presentation of the quote is as significant as the words themselves. The text is framed by vibrant African fabric. This is the same material the family chose to dress Joyce in for her final journey.
By surrounding her favourite phrase with the fabric she donned until her death, the artwork serves as a physical bridge between her memory and Krowbar’s future.
Krowbar expressed his gratitude for the support system that has stayed by his side throughout his grief, noting that he felt "blessed with the gift of community".
The Journey of Joyce Wanjiru Karumba
The tribute comes only months after a long and public health battle. Joyce Wanjiru Karumba passed away in the early hours of Monday, 26 January 2026.

Her death followed a prolonged struggle with chronic kidney failure. Although she underwent a kidney transplant in an effort to restore her health, she ultimately died from complications related to the procedure.

For DJ Krowbar, the birthday was not just a reminder of loss, but a reaffirmation of faith. He shared the artwork on social media, adding the sentiment: "OUR BEST YEAR YET in Jesus name."
The family has previously requested privacy as they continue to mourn their loss and navigate life without Joyce. However, Krowbar’s decision to share this moment highlights the impact of his wife’s optimistic spirit on his ongoing journey of healing.
