Early, actress Diana Luvand had questioned why a fighter would be hit "in the balls."

Mbavu’s own statement echoed this sentiment. He claimed that the match involved "njwang’a," a term suggesting illegal or low blows.

Mbavu wrote that he felt the tactics used against him were unfair. He stated that if this is how the sport is played, he might have to use similar tactics himself. He repeatedly emphasised his belief that the conduct during the match was not true boxing.
