President William Ruto speaking in Narok on April 5, 2026 / PCSPresident William Ruto has pushed back against critics, declaring that leadership is determined by God and not human influence, in remarks that sharpen the political debate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Sunday in Narok, Ruto dismissed claims by his opponents, saying no individual has the power to decide who leads the country.
“What you said is yours, but what is bound to happen is God’s wish. No matter the level of influence you have, you will not decide. It is God who will decide. That is the truth as it is,” he said.
The President said some leaders mistake their own opinions for God’s will, while others lecture Kenyans on what should happen politically.

“In 2022, many people did not believe that it could be possible for me to clinch the Presidency, but God planned it. In 2027, God will plan how things will turn out. I ask Kenyans to have faith and vote together. The rest, God will take care of it,” he said.

Speaking at the burial of former Senator Daniel Karaba in Kirinyaga, Uhuru warned voters against being swayed by persuasive politicians.
“It is good to listen to leaders. Politicians have a sweet tongue, and I told you. Even that last-born daughter of yours, whom you hope to marry off to a well-educated man, you may end up giving her away because of a sweet tongue,” Uhuru said.
He urged Kenyans to elect leaders who offer honest advice and prioritise development, cautioning against those who exploit ethnic divisions or personal ambition.
Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa also weighed in, agreeing that leaders are chosen by God’s grace but warning that difficult leadership can serve as a wake-up call.
“Yes, I agree, an elected leader is chosen by God’s grace. However, just like in the case of King Saul, God can allow a bad leader to awaken a people so they may reflect and appreciate the state of their nation,” he said.
Karungo cited the biblical story of Saul, saying God had warned Israel of the consequences of his rule, including war, servitude, and heavy taxation.
“Sadly, we are seeing similar patterns today. That’s why we are awoke,” he added
