900 Golfers Ruiru Captains Prize Week

More than 900 golfers are expected to converge at Ruiru Sports Club for the 2026 Captain’s Prize Week.

The seven-day golfing festival tees off on April 6 and runs through April 12.

The arrival will be a defining moment for the club following extensive fairway and greens upgrades completed under Club Captain Justus Mathenge.

The improvements are set to significantly enhance playability and overall course experience as players from across the country line up for one of the most anticipated fixtures on the domestic calendar.

Speaking ahead of the week-long event, Mathenge noted that the tournament has evolved beyond a single-day competition into a full-scale celebration of golf.

“We are excited to welcome golfers from across the country for a week that celebrates every part of the game, from juniors and seniors to caddies, staff, amateurs and professionals,” said Captain Mathenge.

“With the upgrades to our fairways and greens, the course is in excellent condition and ready for a truly memorable Captain’s Prize week.”

It will bring together juniors, seniors, caddies, staff, amateurs and professionals in a unified festival atmosphere.

They added that the upgraded course now presents an ideal test for competitors while elevating the club’s status as a premier golfing destination within Kenya’s rapidly growing golf ecosystem.

The action begins on Monday with a clergy and friends’ tournament, setting the tone for the festivities. It will then shift to a seniors’ competition on Tuesday that celebrates longevity and experience within the sport.

Midweek action will also spotlight caddies and club staff in a dedicated tournament recognising their integral role behind the scenes.

Thursday’s captain’s club night transitions the focus to social engagement, building up to Friday’s mixed-format event that blends professionals and amateurs alongside a Gen X and Gen Z showcase.

The culminating in Saturday’s headline Captain’s Prize showdown is expected to draw the largest field of the week, before the curtain falls on Sunday with a junior golf day aimed at nurturing emerging talent.

Historically, the Captain’s Prize tournament at Ruiru has consistently attracted strong fields and competitive scoring.

It reflects its stature within the Kenya Golf Union calendar, with past editions producing tightly contested finishes and notable performances from low handicap players

The 2026 edition is backed by sponsors such as Isuzu East Africa, NCBA Group, Pernod Ricard, Stanbic Bank Kenya, TotalEnergies and Britam Holdings.
