The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) says it is still awaiting the implementation of a promotion plan it claims was communicated during a meeting with government officials six months ago.

The union says teachers were informed that they would be moved by one additional job group following discussions held in September last year.

KUSNET General Secretary James Torome said the teachers have not benefited from the proposed promotion.

He said the matter has raised concern among members.

“There was a directive that teachers be given one more job group. But six months down the line, the directive has not been implemented,” Torome said.

Speaking when they distributed food and non-food items to pupils of Hope Special School for the Mentally Challenged in Suba North constituency, KUSNET urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to fast-track the matter.

Accompanied by KUSNET First National Trustee Jackson Odindo, Torome said the commission should implement the process before the end of the month.

Odindo, who is also the head teacher of Hope Special School for the Mentally Challenged, said pupils with special needs require more support due to the challenges they face.

“The school has poor infrastructure because we are using classrooms as dormitories. This has forced us to limit admission, hence we appeal for more help,” he said.
