
The landscape of African aviation continues to evolve, with southern and northern hubs dominating the latest rankings for the continent’s best air travel gateways.
According to the 2026 World Airport Awards, which are determined by prestigious customer-voted surveys, Cape Town International Airport has secured the top position as the premier airport in Africa.
This ranking is the result of extensive feedback from passengers representing over 100 nationalities, surveyed between August 2025 and February 2026.
South Africa maintains a commanding presence in the aviation sector, claiming three of the top four spots. Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International follows in second place, while Durban’s King Shaka International holds the fourth position.
Morocco also shows significant strength in the region, with Marrakech claiming the third spot and Casablanca rounding out the top five.
The diversity of the top ten highlights a competitive field across the continent’s geographic regions. Cairo International represents North Africa at number six, while the island nation of Mauritius maintains its reputation for quality at number seven.
East Africa sees strong representation through Rwanda’s Kigali at number eight and Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa at number nine. Completing the elite list is Antananarivo, the capital hub of Madagascar.
These rankings serve as a critical benchmark for excellence in the industry, reflecting the specific preferences and experiences of the global traveling public who utilize these facilities for business and leisure.
