Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is making headlines for a dramatic lifestyle turnaround. He has publicly shamed his former self for keeping a massive stash of expensive alcohol in his office. This comes as he prepares to exit the nightlife industry entirely.
The ‘Quarter Million’ Office Stash
Sonko recently shared a video on social media reflecting on his past habits. In the footage, he displays a wide array of luxury spirits he used to keep in his office. He estimated the value of the collection at between KSh 250,000 and KSh 300,000.

The collection featured high-end brands including Lamborghini, Hennessy XO, and Martell XO. He also pointed out bottles of Don Julio and various tequilas. Looking back, the former governor was critical of why he felt the need to stock such items.

"We don’t need alcohol in the office. Alcohol is not needed in the office... Shame on you Sonko, the old you," Sonko remarked in the video.
He questioned his previous motivations, suggesting the alcohol was kept to "please girls" in the office. He ended his reflection with a religious declaration, calling for the removal of the stock in the name of Jesus Christ.
Exiting the Nightlife Business
This public self-correction follows Sonko’s announcement on 2nd April 2026 that he intends to sell or lease his Volume VIP Club. The nightclub is a significant asset in his hospitality portfolio. He launched the venue after his impeachment as governor in 2020.
The move signals a complete withdrawal from the alcohol trade. Sonko stated he would either sell the business or simply give away all the remaining alcohol stock as he starts a new chapter.
Faith and Physical Health
The shift is reportedly driven by a newfound commitment to faith and personal health. Sonko has been open about his decision to stop drinking and draw closer to God. This marks a major departure from his previous public image, which was often associated with high-energy nightlife and flamboyant social gatherings.

His transformation is also physical. Following medical advice, Sonko has adopted a healthier routine involving exercise and better sleep patterns. These changes have led to significant weight loss.
A Significant Career Shift
For years, Sonko was known for his generosity in entertainment venues and his presence in Kenya’s social scene. His latest actions suggest a total restructuring of his personal and business priorities.
While there is currently no set timeline for the sale or lease of the Volume VIP Club, Sonko appears determined to leave his old habits behind. It remains unclear if he will invest in alternative, non-alcohol-related businesses in the future.
