From Movie Narration to Ringside Action
DJ Afro, whose real name is James Mwangi, is widely known across Kenya and Tanzania for his unique style of narrating films using a blend of Swahili, Sheng, and Kikuyu.
His transition from VCD narration to live sports commentary marks a major shift in his career.
“The official commentator… is the one and only DJ Afro Amigos,” Obinna revealed in his announcement, responding to fan demand.
This will be the first time DJ Afro lends his iconic, humorous voice to a live sporting event an aspect that fans believe will elevate the entertainment value of the fight.
A Fight Built on Viral Fame
The bout between Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer has grown into one of Kenya’s most talked-about amateur boxing events.
What began as a viral online rivalry has escalated into a fully sponsored showdown, complete with press conferences, chaotic weigh-ins, and intense social media exchanges.
The fight is scheduled to take place on April 4 at the Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, with thousands of fans expected to attend.
"Siku ni Saturday 4th April pale Kasarani Stadium tujue kati ya Majembe na Mbavu Destroyer nani mkali wa wakali wooooooteeee. I will be commentating LIVE. Noondano itakua hatari. DJ Afro is BACK! Tupatane Kasarani," DJ Afro confirmed via his Facebook page.
Big Money, Big Names, Bigger Hype
Beyond the entertainment angle, the event has attracted significant financial backing and political attention.
Reports indicate that President William Ruto pledged KSh1 million to each fighter, while other political and business figures have also contributed funds.
Sponsors have equally joined in, with one partner reportedly offering a brand-new car as the grand prize for the winner, further raising the stakes of the match.

More Than Just a Fight
With DJ Afro on commentary, organisers are positioning the event as more than just a boxing match—it’s a full entertainment spectacle blending sports, comedy, and Kenyan pop culture.
His signature storytelling, humour, and dramatic narration are expected to transform the fight into a cinematic experience, making Vurugu Fight Night one of the most unique live events in Kenya this year.
A Cultural Moment in the Making
The inclusion of DJ Afro reflects a growing trend in Kenya’s entertainment scene—merging internet culture with live events to create viral moments that resonate with a younger audience.
As anticipation builds, all eyes are now on Kasarani to see whether the fight—and its star commentator—will live up to the hype.
