Security boost as IG Douglas Kanja launches protection unit at Del Monte/NPS X

The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, has launched a specialised security unit aimed at strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure at Del Monte Kenya.

The unit, known as the Administration Police Service Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit – Del Monte Sector, was unveiled on Thursday as part of efforts to enhance security around key investments, employees, and surrounding communities.

The deployment is expected to boost surveillance, improve rapid response capabilities, and ensure a sustained law enforcement presence in the area.

Kanja said the initiative was informed by concerns raised during the Jukwaa la Usalama – Kiambu Chapter, where stakeholders called for more coordinated and community-driven security solutions.

He noted that the new unit reflects a shift towards intelligence-led policing designed to respond more effectively to emerging threats.

“The establishment of this specialised unit demonstrates our commitment to protecting life and property while addressing the evolving security needs of critical investments,” Kanja said.

Del Monte Kenya Managing Director Wayne Cook welcomed the move, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening collaboration between the private sector and security agencies.

He said the partnership is grounded in responsible and community-conscious policing.

Cook added that the initiative will not only safeguard the company’s operations but also enhance the safety of neighbouring communities.

He said it provides a structured and collaborative approach to addressing security challenges in the region.

The Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, who accompanied Kanja, praised the leadership behind the initiative.

He said the Inspector General’s support had been instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.

Masengeli emphasised the importance of protecting investments of such scale, noting that they play a critical role in supporting livelihoods and economic growth.

He said robust and well-coordinated security measures are essential to ensuring stability and investor confidence.

He expressed optimism that the partnership will deliver long-term security benefits, strengthen relations between the police and the community, and serve as a model for similar collaborations across the country.

Several senior security officials attended the launch, including APS Director of Security Operations Jackson Kangani and APS Deputy Director of Logistics Gilbert Sumukwo. County and regional security leaders from Kiambu, Murang’a, and neighbouring areas were also present.

The introduction of the unit marks a strategic effort by the National Police Service to adopt proactive and partnership-driven approaches to security, particularly in areas hosting major investments.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to address modern security challenges while fostering trust between institutions and the communities they serve.
