Human rights activist and Mtetezi Grassroots convener Francis Awino has called for renewed civic engagement and accountability, encouraging collaboration between activists, institutions, and students to build a more informed and participatory society.
Speaking during a public engagement with University of Nairobi students on Thursday, Awino emphasised the need to connect academic learning with real-world experiences, particularly for political science students.
He cited a past instance where a grassroots leader was invited to lecture students despite lacking formal academic credentials, noting that knowledge extends beyond classrooms into lived experiences.
Awino proposed creating structured platforms for students to engage directly with activists and practitioners, describing this as a step toward fostering practical understanding of governance and ideology.
He referenced the 2024 Finance Bill, noting that human rights defenders had previously raised concerns about its impact on ordinary citizens. He added that limited dialogue on the bill contributed to nationwide demonstrations, reflecting broader public frustrations over economic justice and representation.
Awino also criticised what he described as inconsistent leadership and called for greater transparency in leadership systems. He suggested that contested leadership outcomes should be independently audited to enhance credibility and public trust.
On issues of workers’ contributions, Awino emphasised accountability, stating that funds collected from citizens should be properly accounted for. He highlighted concerns about worker support systems, noting that transparency and institutional effectiveness are critical.
Acknowledging the toll of past demonstrations, including loss of lives, Awino emphasised the importance of peaceful engagement moving forward and announced plans for formal dialogue with law enforcement agencies.
He concluded by calling on Kenyans to remain collective in their pursuit of justice, saying, “We are one nation, serving one God.”
