Kitui MCAs have agreed to help raise awareness on the ongoing voter registration to help the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) enlist 60000 eligible voters in the county.
The resolution was made after an appeal from IEBC officials for help achieve the target. The electoral agency has launched a 30-day enhanced continuous voter registration exercise countrywide.
On Tuesday, during the second day of the mass registration drive, Kitui county election manager Macharia Gichihi visited the county assembly, urging ward representatives to mobilise residents in their constituencies to register as voters.
Gichihi was hosted by speaker Kevin Katisya.
The election manager, who was accompanied by county registration officer Joshua Mutua and Huduma Centre manager Monica Chengo, updated MCAs on voter registration progress and preparations ahead of the 2027 general election.
He emphasised that registering every eligible Kenyan is a critical step in strengthening the democratic process.
“Voter registration is a fundamental pillar of democracy,” Gichihi said, urging the ward representatives to rally citizens within their wards to register.
Katisya encouraged leaders to engage communities in schools, churches, and other public institutions to ensure residents acquire national IDs to enable them register as voters.
He commended Kitui residents for their enthusiasm, noting that the county currently ranks fourth nationally, with over 11,000 new voters registered since September 29, 2025.
Katisya expressed confidence that with collaborative efforts, Kitui could surpass its 60,000 target for new voters.
“An informed and active citizenry is the foundation of a strong democracy, as enshrined in Articles 10 and 38 of the Constitution of Kenya,” he said.
MCAs lauded the IEBC initiative, describing the session as instrumental in raising awareness and providing critical information about the voter registration process.
