The Kenyan entertainment industry is in shock following reports that popular comedian Sammy Kioko was assaulted at the gates of the Machakos County offices.

The incident allegedly took place while Kioko was protesting a Sh19 million debt he claims is owed to him by the Machakos County Government. Kioko is currently recovering in a hospital in Athi River after a physical encounter with county enforcement officers, known as askaris.

Assault and Arrest at the County Gate

According to reports, the comedian had gone to the county headquarters to demand payment for services rendered. Witnesses suggest the situation escalated when county askaris moved to disperse the protest. Kioko was reportedly beaten and subsequently arrested by the officers.

Fellow comedian Nasra Yusuf was among the first to break the news on social media. She described the event as the "highest level of impunity" shown to citizens who are simply asking for what they are owed.

Yusuf initially shared her distress over not knowing where the authorities had taken Kioko and his associates. She later confirmed that Kioko was not okay and had been taken to a medical facility for treatment.

Celebrities Call Out Governor Wavinya Ndeti

The news triggered a wave of outrage across Instagram, with several high-profile figures tagging Governor Wavinya Ndeti in their posts.

Comedian Eddie Butita shared a video of Kioko lying in a hospital bed, visibly injured. Butita did not hold back, calling the Governor's administration a "disgrace" for the treatment of hardworking citizens. He urged the county to respect those who keep the region running and to settle the Sh19 million debt.

“Pay people their money, stop punishing hardworking citizens. Respect the people who keep your county running,” he posted.

Dr Ofweneke also addressed the Governor directly, focusing on the legacy of her leadership. He noted that a leader should be remembered for the actions of their heart rather than their ego.

He warned that history would judge the current administration based on these events.

“We can no longer ignore what’s happening to Sammy Kioko. Wavinya Ndeti, a good leader is remembered not from his/her ego but from actions from his/her heart. History will remember this.”

A Growing National Concern

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about the safety of citizens when dealing with local government authorities. Media personality Oga Obinna issued a stern warning to the Machakos County Government.

He stated that the entire country is now watching the situation closely. Obinna suggested that the county would regret not finding a peaceful solution to the debt row sooner.

“If anything happens to SAMMY KIOKO, the Machakos County Government will wish they sat down and found a solution sooner. The whole country is watching.” – Oga Obinna.

Support for "Hardworking Youth"

Content creator Dem wa FB expressed her frustration, questioning why a young person should face such violence for being hardworking. She joined the online movement using the hashtag #JusticeForKioko and wished the comedian a quick recovery.

Milly Chebby also echoed these sentiments, sharing her disbelief at the reports of the assault and arrest, labelling the entire situation as crazy.

As of the latest updates from Nasra Yusuff, Sammy Kioko remains in hospital in Athi River, with friends and fans being asked to keep him in their prayers.
