Over the weekend, Mwatate United, coached by Evans Mafuta, pulled off a shocker to beat SportPesa League promotion favourites Migori Youth 1-0 at Wundanyi Stadium.
On Tuesday, Mafuta expressed confidence in their escape mission.
“The win against Migori gave us the momentum to continue fighting. We have shifted our focus to the game against Soy United over the weekend,” remarked Mafuta.
“My focus is to pick nine points from our next five games.”
Vihiga United revived their survival hopes after beating Kabati Youth 2-1, while MCF’s woes were compounded after sinking to a 3-1 loss against leaders Mombasa United.
MCF coach Francis Chege was furious with the officials.
“Some teams are awarded non-existent penalties, wrong offside calls, and fouls that don't exist in the laws of the game,” said the tactician.
Kisumu All Stars, under assistant coach Geoffrey Keya, moved out of danger after a 2-0 win over Gucha Stars on Sunday.
Keya has overseen the former Premier League side in the absence of coach Duncan Otieno.
At the top, United opened a three-point gap over Migori Youth. The coastal side leads the table with 55 points.
Equity Bank are third with 49 points, two better than 3K FC at fourth. The Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) dropped to fifth following a 1-1 draw against Nairobi City Stars.
