Jabanation is emerging as a powerful new voice in Kenya’s changing music scene. It is a collaborative project led by electronic producers Dylan-S and Aahil.

According to the producers, the project began with a simple question: what happens when young people stop consuming culture and start creating their own?

This question led to the release of Jabanation in late 2025.

A Movement Born on the Streets

The record blends several genres. It brings together Afro house, electronic beats, and urban street sounds. The track features a diverse group of artists, including the hip hop collective Buruklyn Boys, lyricist Silverstone Barz, and cultural artist Makadem.

The creators describe Jabanation as a cultural statement. They chose to film the music video on the streets of Buruburu in Nairobi.

Instead of using staged sets, they featured real residents and local environments. This was done to reflect a genuine version of Kenyan expression.

“From the raw streets to the late-night lights, every sound tells a story. Different voices. Different flavours. One Nairobi spirit,” says producer Aahil.

The project is positioned as a “countermovement.” It aims to show that culture is built through community and collaboration, rather than advertising.

According to Aahil, the music acts as a mirror of the city’s energy. It is about bringing different voices together for the community, not just for the club.

Redefining the Soundscape

Jabanation represents a wider shift in the local industry. Many Kenyan artists are now breaking away from narrow genre definitions. They are merging different musical influences to create something new. This allows them to maintain a local identity while engaging with global sounds.

The project has already seen commercial success. According to data from Popnable, the Jabanation video charted within Kenya’s Top 40 songs. It has also been featured on various playlists that highlight the country’s diverse musical identity.

“We’re showing that Kenyan music can speak globally without losing its feet on our streets,” Aahil explained.

The movement is also crossing national borders. A remix pack is in development, featuring collaborations with South African Afro house producers and local talent. This effort is designed to blur the lines between different musical influences across the continent.

The Countdown to KODA

The momentum is now building towards a major live event. A multi-genre showcase is scheduled for 2nd May 2026. It will take place at KODA in Westlands, Nairobi.

The performance will bring the collaborative spirit of the record to the stage. The line-up includes Kususa, Dylan-S, Aahil, and the Buruklyn Boys. Silverstone Barz, Makadem, Foozak, and Lemi will join them.

The show will blend house, hip hop, and Afro-inspired beats. It is intended to be a live reflection of a "new Kenya" that is both rooted in tradition and forward-looking.
