Listeners across Kenya are preparing for a morning of confusion and excitement this Good Friday. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Radio Africa Group has announced a historic event called "The Takeover."

On Friday, 3 April, every major presenter from the group’s four biggest stations will swap studios.

A First for Kenyan Radio

This is the first time in 25 years that such a coordinated cross-station swap has occurred in Kenya. There will be no rehearsals and no safety nets for the personalities involved.

The Takeover will take place in four major brands: Kiss 100, Classic 105, Radio Jambo, and Homeboyz Radio. On the day of the swap, presenters will walk into unfamiliar studios and host shows for an entirely different audience.

Maina Kageni, who has hosted the breakfast show on Classic 105 for over two decades, could find himself broadcasting from a completely different environment.

Similarly, Radio Jambo’s breakfast duo Gidi and Ghost might meet a new audience on a different frequency.

Listeners Hold the Power

The final lineup for the day is not decided by the management. Instead, the 42.5 million Kenyan listeners have been given the power to vote for who goes where.

Voting is currently open on Songaplay.com. A real-time leaderboard shows where each presenter is currently headed based on public choice.

"When Friday comes and you hear the wrong voice on the right station, remember: you did this."

The leaderboard is expected to move constantly until the very last minute.

  • Voting Closes: Thursday, 2 April at 10:00 AM.
  • The Takeover Day: Friday, 3 April (Good Friday).

Once the clock strikes 10:00 AM on Thursday, the leaderboard becomes the final schedule. No extensions or second chances will be given for the vote.

Radio Africa Group is encouraging fans to follow the hashtags #TheTakeover #WhoMovesWhere #RadioAfrica25 #TakeoverDay on social media to track the shifting positions of their favourite presenters.
