Organisers of the Linda Mwananchi rally in Mombasa have assured supporters of adequate security ahead of today's event at Tononoka Grounds.
Previous rallies by the ODM splinter group, led by embattled Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, have been marred by chaos and ended prematurely, in disarray.
Moses Aran, one of the event organisers, on Saturday led supporters to inspect the venue.
Political pundits have described the rally as a litmus test to gauge Linda Mwananchi’s popularity in the Coast region, long considered an ODM stronghold for over two decades.
The planned rally comes barely a month after the ODM Linda Ground faction, led by Party Leader Oburu Oginga, held a separate gathering at the same venue.
Aran claimed the country is heading in the wrong direction and the group is determined to champion the interests of ordinary citizens rather than pursue a self-serving political agenda.
“We are not here to rubber-stamp decisions; we are here to ensure wananchi are defended and that Kenya upholds the rule of law. I want to assure you that everything is set,” said Aran.
“It is good to give credit where it is due. We have received support from the security team and have permission to hold the rally,” he added, noting that security leadership from the OCS to the County Police Commander had been notified and were cooperating with the organisers.
He urged supporters from across the Coast region to turn up in large numbers, adding that the rally will begin with a church service at a venue to be announced.
“Do not cower; we cannot be intimidated. At this stage, the only intimidation we accept is from the public. We are ready to stand firm for wananchi and will not watch the country take the wrong direction,” Aran stated.
Another organiser of the rally, Edwin Shamir, criticised what he termed the selective application of democracy, warning that it risks eroding gains made under the 2010 Constitution.
“We want everyone to enjoy freedom of expression without teargas or interference from the government or hired goons. We are calling for a peaceful rally in Mombasa,” said Shamir, urging police to remain impartial.
On his part, Mombasa youth leader Ali Kubo cautioned politicians against intimidating Linda Mwananchi leaders, saying the rally is open to all people regardless of background.
Former Mombasa Woman Representative Asha Mohamed said the movement is ready to champion liberation both nationally and within the county, citing concerns over human rights abuses.
She called on women to turn out in large numbers, emphasising their critical role in the movement.
Human rights defender Bradley Ouna said police have been duly notified and expressed hope for maximum security. “If teargas is used, I will stand firm and shield others,” he said.
John Gichana, a regular attendee of Linda Mwananchi rallies, appealed to police to refrain from using teargas, assuring that participants will remain peaceful and law-abiding.
