When looking for a perfect travel destination in Kenya, rarely would you think of a place tucked away in the remote areas of northern Kenya, right?
Maybe it’s because the region is largely classified as arid and semi-arid, associated with challenges such as limited infrastructure and slower development compared to Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, and other major cities.
But besides the challenges the northern region faces lies a beautiful side that many have not discovered yet. Northern Kenya is a hidden gem rich in breathtaking landscapes, luxurious hotels, unique cultures and generally, the most amazing yet underrated travel experiences in the country.
One might assume that the only striking feature of northern Kenya is its desert landscape. But the moment I set foot there, that perception quickly faded. I found myself in awe of a region far more diverse than I had imagined. From semi-arid savannahs, rocky landscapes and uniquely sculpted mountains to wildlife that roams freely, often visible right from the main road, the scenery is nothing short of breathtaking.
One place that stood out for me was Mount Ololokwe. Located in Samburu county, the mountain rises as a striking monolith above a surprisingly green landscape that stretches out beneath it.
What makes the experience even more captivating is the journey towards it. The road leading to Mount Ololokwe is smoothly tarmacked, its yellow dashed lines cutting through the terrain in a way that complements the natural beauty around it.
In the distance, the mountain sits quietly yet commandingly, curving gracefully against the horizon. It is a view that is simply impossible to miss and even harder to forget. It is also a wonderful destination for those who love hiking, and perfect for photographers and content creators looking for content to wow their audiences with.
And for those who love vacations and holiday getaways, spending a few days in northern Kenya’s luxurious hotels might sound like a good plan. Most of these hotels are located right next to national parks and game reserves, giving you the perfect view of wildlife in their natural habitat, while you sit in your comfort zone.
A perfect day could look like having a refreshing swim in a pool overlooking the reserve, and end with a candlelit dinner under the stars, as elephants, lions and other members of the Big Five roam freely in the park. It is the kind of view that forces you to slow down, take it in and appreciate the quiet grandeur of northern Kenya.
Beyond its landscapes, northern Kenya is just as captivating in its culture, where tradition is not preserved for display but lived out in vibrant, everyday expression. The Turkana, Samburu, Rendille and Gabbra call this land home, and they have a vibrant culture that is closely knit into their traditions.
Their ceremonies unfold in a spectacle of colour and rhythm, complemented by their dressing, which includes beaded necklaces and intricately patterned garments. Their culture is one that attracts tourists from far and wide.
There is so much more tucked away in the beauty of northern Kenya, waiting to be discovered. Perhaps the only way to truly understand it is to experience it firsthand. With the Easter holiday around the corner, this could be the perfect opportunity to step away from the familiar and explore this region. The journey might be long, but with every mile you will realise it is worth it.
