3K FC players celebrate at Gusii Stadium on Wednesday/ANGWENYI GICHANA

3K FC assistant coach Dennis Okoth has maintained that the race for promotion from the National Super League is still wide open, dismissing claims that only a handful of teams are in contention for a place in next season’s FKF Premier League.

Okoth believes the battle remains unpredictable with more than a dozen matches left to play. “With more than 13 games to go, any team currently in the top eight can still secure promotion. As 3K FC, we are firmly in that race. All we need is to stay focused,” he said.

He was speaking at Gusii Stadium on Wednesday after 3K FC secured a 2-0 win over Gucha Stars in a rescheduled fixture. Former Kisii University captain Samuel Wahinya and Mark Kithome found the back of the net as 3K stretched their unbeaten run to eight matches under new head coach Nicodemus Omasete.

Okoth has now challenged his side to maintain consistency in the decisive stretch of the campaign. “We are in good form at the moment and want to sustain it until the end of the season.

Any slip-up at this stage could prove costly,” he added. Reflecting on the match, Okoth admitted it was a tough contest but praised his players for their efficiency in front of goal.

“I want to thank the boys because they utilised their chances,” he said. The win lifted 3K FC to fourth place on 44 points, level with Michael Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) but with a superior goal difference.

Elsewhere, Equity Bank FC climbed to third after a 3-0 victory over bottom-placed Mully Children’s Family FC, moving to 46 points. MOFA dropped to fifth, while Migori Youth FC and Mombasa United FC continue to lead the standings on 52 points.

Gucha Stars assistant captain Francis Oyugi expressed disappointment with the result, admitting the team had hoped to secure maximum points at home.

“We went into the game expecting three points, but that was not the case. We must now focus on bouncing back in our next match,” said Oyugi. Gucha Stars will next travel to Kisumu to face relegation-threatened Kisumu All Stars on Sunday.
