Junior Starlets set for landmark U17 World Cup Qualifier against Namibia

Kenya’s U17 women’s national team, the Junior Starlets, are ramping up preparations for a crucial two-legged FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier clash against Namibia.

The tie will kick off with an away fixture on April 12 before Kenya hosts the return leg on April 18, in what is expected to be a defining test for the youthful squad.

Midfielder Mwanakombo Bakari expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, highlighting their determination to secure a place at the global showpiece.

“I thank God for making it to the national team. Training is going on well, and we know Namibia are also preparing hard. But we are doing the same, and we will keep pushing ourselves until we reach the World Cup,” she said.

Head coach Mildred Cheche has emphasised adaptability and team cohesion as Kenya braces for a first-ever meeting with the Southern African side at this level.

Cheche noted that the current squad represents a transition phase, with several players from the previous cycle having moved up to the U20 ranks, leaving a relatively young and inexperienced group to step up.

“We have a young squad because most of our players progressed to the under-20 team. So we selected a new group from different parts of the country,” she explained.

The coach admitted that the lack of prior encounters with Namibia adds an element of uncertainty to the tie. “We have never played Namibia before, so we don’t know their style. We are preparing based on our strengths and will approach it one match at a time,” she added.

Training sessions have focused on building tactical awareness, fitness, and flexibility, with the technical bench keen on quickly integrating new players and strengthening on-field chemistry.

With the first leg away from home, Kenya will be targeting a solid result to set the tone before returning for the decisive second leg, where home advantage could prove crucial.
