
The government has officially declared parts of Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo counties as security-disturbed and dangerous.
Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen issued the declaration through a Special Issue of the Kenya Gazette on Thursday.
"We have declared parts of Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo counties as security-disturbed and dangerous to facilitate a major security operation to weed out perpetrators of recent incidents of criminal activities in the areas," Murkome said.
"This operation, which also involves a mop-up of illegal firearms, follows our earlier deployment of 400 additional police officers to reinforce the officers on the ground, among other measures. We shall intensify our efforts until banditry is completely eradicated in these areas and criminal networks dismantled."
The directive was made in exercise of powers conferred by the National Police Service Act.
Murkomen said the action was taken in consultation with the National Security Council.
The move targets specific areas within the three counties to address security concerns.
In Laikipia North, the order covers Mugogo Forest, including Mugogodo, Sieku, Makuriani, and Doldol.
In Tigania East Subcounty, affected areas include Mlima Rasta, Mlima Lombolio, Mworontoi Belt, and the Nyambene Game Reserve.
The declaration also extends to Igembe North Sub-county and several locations in Isiolo North Subcounty.
In Igembe North, areas affected include Ngatho dam area, while in Isiolo North Subcounty the areas affected include Sarova Game Reserve, Lowarengishu Hills, Mutunyi Hills and Luruku Hills.
The notice is expected to take effect on March 26, 2026, starting at 6 pm and will remain in place for a period of 30 days.
"This notice shall take effect on March 26, 2026, as from 6 pm, for a period of 30 days and may at any time be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Gazette direct."
