The long-running dispute between Kenyan content creator Sammy Kioko and the Machakos County government has taken a new turn. Kioko has now shared a screenshot of an M-Pesa notification on his Instagram account. The message shows a payment of KSh 20,000.
This payment arrives after months of public back-and-forth regarding a debt Kioko claims the county owes him. He maintains that the total outstanding amount for services rendered is KSh 19 million.

The Math of the Debt
The recent KSh 20,000 payment represents a tiny fraction of the total claim. When calculated against the KSh 19 million Kioko says he is owed, this amount is approximately 0.11% of the total sum.
“Out of 19 million, the only money that we have received is 20k through mpesa from The chief Finance officer machakos county,” Kioko captioned the screenshot.
For every KSh 1,000 Kioko claims he is owed, this payment covers just over one shilling. The leak has sparked fresh conversation online about the slow pace of settlements for local contractors.

Kioko feels that this is a manipulation game being played by the county officials in charge of his alleged Ksh 19 million debt.
“This is the highest level of manipulation and intimidation that we have ever received from Machakos county.”
Months of Escalating Tension
The saga reached a boiling point in early February 2026. Kioko and his sister spent a night camping outside the Machakos County government offices. They braved the cold to demand the KSh 19 million they say has been owed for several years.

Kioko stated that he had exhausted all formal channels. He described the act of sleeping outside government buildings as "humiliating but necessary" to get the attention of authorities.
The County’s Official Stance
The Machakos County Government at the time, consistently denied any direct business relationship with the comedian. In November 2025, County Solicitor Juliet Nthambi issued a formal letter dismissing Kioko’s claims as false and misleading.
The county stated that Kioko is not a registered supplier. Officials argued that he does not appear as a director or contact person for any company contracted by the government.
Furthermore, Joseph Mathuki, the Head of Procurement, explained that the tender in question was awarded to a registered entity that did not list Kioko as a director. He also noted that the initial phase of that contract had faced incomplete deliveries, which caused payment delays.
A Personal Toll
The financial strain has had a visible impact on Kioko’s life. He previously shared that he had to close his business outlets and production facilities. He even put his car up for sale to raise funds for his sister’s medical treatment.

The online community has rallied around him in the past. During an interview on The Obinna Show, fans contributed over KSh 221,000 to assist him during his financial crisis.
