Migori Youth players training at Gusii Stadium/ANGWENYI GICHANA Migori Youth FC underlined their promotion credentials after moving to the top of the National Super League (NSL) table.
Migori Youth beat the former Premier League side FC Talanta 3-1 on Monday to leapfrog Mombasa Youth to the top of the log.
The two teams, which are favourites to seal SportPesa League promotion slots, tied on 52 points and have the same goal difference of 16.
The Micheal Olunga Foundation Academy (MOFA) remains third with 44 points following their crucial 3-2 win over Vihiga United.
Mombasa United’s promotion hopes were dealt a blow after going down 1-0 against Fortune Sacco. Coach Gilbert Selebwa termed the loss a minor setback.
“The loss was bound to happen. We knew it was going to be a difficult match. It’s a small dent in our pursuit for promotion,” said Selebwa.
“The loss doesn’t kill our morale. We must redeem ourselves in our upcoming games against MCF and Vihiga United. We must make amends in the two games.
Fortune Sacco’s coach Vincent Nyaberi said they are back in the promotion chase.
“This is a vital win because we have revived our promotion chances,” added Nyaberi, who served as Selebwa’s assistant during their stint at Shabana.
In the battle for the golden boot, Migori Youth’s Syphas Otieno leads the top scorer charts with 17 goals, followed by Collins Mwangi with 14 goals.
Athman Rashid Moyo is third with 13 goals, the same as MOFA’s Vincent Nyabuto. Mofa’s Joshua Amunike has nine goals.
At the same time, Gucha Stars FC is relishing their clash against 3K FC on Wednesday at Gusii Stadium.
The game was due two weeks ago, but was postponed due to 3K’s involvement in the Mozzart Bet Cup.
Gucha’s assistant coach, Boniface Nyakebaka, said they want to end 3K’s fine form.
“We played on Sunday against Soy and won 1-0. This gives the players morale ahead of the 3K FC game,” said Nyakebaka.
3K FC is unbeaten since they hired coach Nicodemus Omasete two months ago. On Saturday, 3K FC was held to a 1-1 draw against Darajani Gogo.
