The death toll from ongoing floods across the country has risen to 88 as torrential rains continue to trigger flooding, landslides and widespread destruction, the National Police Service has said.
It said several regions are experiencing severe flooding and related disasters, leaving communities displaced and infrastructure damaged.
“In Kilungu subcounty, Makueni county, a landslide tragically claimed the lives of two children and left four others injured,” NPS said.
According to the service thousands of families have been forced to flee their homes due to the rising waters.
“As of 24th March 2026, reports from various regions indicate that the number of lives lost due to the ongoing floods has risen to 88, with 2,690 families displaced and taking refuge in temporary evacuation centres,” the statement said.
The heavy rains have also destroyed roads and bridges, slowing down rescue and relief efforts in affected areas.
“The ongoing heavy downpours have also rendered numerous roads impassable and caused significant damage to several bridges, complicating relief operations and restricting access to affected communities,” NPS said.
Authorities said multi-agency teams are on high alert and continue to conduct search and rescue operations while delivering relief supplies and working to restore damaged infrastructure.
The service urged the public to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by authorities and the Kenya Meteorological Department.
“Members of the public are urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution. Furthermore, they are advised not to cross flooded rivers, to avoid driving through moving water and to relocate promptly from high-risk areas when instructed to do so,” it said.
