Kenyan comedian, writer, and filmmaker Eddie Butita has officially unveiled “Slate 100,” a groundbreaking initiative set to reshape Africa’s creative landscape by producing and showcasing 100 films from across the continent.
Powered by SPM Buzz and operating under SPM Africa Studios, the Slate 100 Accelerator Program is designed to empower filmmakers, actors, scriptwriters, and digital content creators. The initiative aims to provide essential tools, industry exposure, and a global platform to elevate authentic African stories.
A Timely Intervention in a Changing Industry
The launch comes at a crucial moment for Africa’s film and television sector. Recent developments, including the scaling down of African original content by Prime Video and restructuring moves by Showmax, have raised concerns about the sustainability and future of locally produced content.
These shifts have sparked widespread debate among creatives and stakeholders about the long-term viability of the African film market. However, Slate 100 positions itself as a direct response to these challenges—placing faith in homegrown talent and reinforcing the global relevance of African storytelling.
Speaking during the announcement, Butita emphasized the need for consistent investment and belief in the continent’s creative potential.
“Africa has the stories, the talent, and the audience. What we need is consistency, investment, and belief in our own industry. Slate 100 is about building that foundation,” he said.

Empowering African Creatives
At its core, the Slate 100 Accelerator Program is an open call to creatives across Africa to bring their ideas to life. The initiative welcomes submissions from filmmakers, writers, actors, and producers at different stages of their careers.
Participants can submit a wide range of projects, including film ideas, scripts, short films, and full-length feature productions. By doing so, they gain access to a structured development pipeline that supports both the creative and production aspects of filmmaking.
This inclusive approach ensures that emerging and established talents alike have an opportunity to contribute to a growing body of African content that reflects diverse cultures, perspectives, and narratives.

Building a Sustainable Creative Ecosystem
Beyond production, Slate 100 aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for African storytelling. By committing to produce 100 films, the initiative seeks to generate employment, nurture talent, and strengthen industry infrastructure across the continent.
It also signals a shift toward self-reliance within the African creative sector—encouraging local investment and ownership of content in an era where international platforms are recalibrating their strategies.
Through SPM Africa Studios, Butita continues to position himself as a key driver in the evolution of Africa’s entertainment industry, leveraging his influence to open doors for the next generation of creatives.

Call for Submissions
African creatives interested in being part of Slate 100 are encouraged to submit their projects through the official platform.
The program is open to participants from across the continent and seeks a diverse range of voices and ideas.
With Slate 100, Eddie Butita is not just launching a film initiative—he is igniting a movement aimed at redefining how African stories are created, shared, and celebrated on the global stage.
