Janet Rose Oloo, professionally known as JRoz, is a Nairobi-based rapper who began her music journey in 2015.
In an exclusive with Mpasho, she explains that her stage name comes from her initials “J.R.” combined with “Roz” from her middle name, Rose.
According to JRoz, it “felt natural, simple, and powerful” and represents her brand identity.
Growing up in a humble background, JRoz says she learned resilience and independence, experiences that now inform her music.


She also draws inspiration from Drake and other global and African talents, as well as her personal experiences, relationships, and observations of society.
Challenges & Growth
JRoz acknowledges the challenges of being a female rapper in Kenya, particularly being taken seriously and overcoming stereotypes.
She notes that it requires “working twice as hard to prove your talent,” but her passion and self-belief sustain her.
