Mary Claire, a 24-year-old Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) singer, has spoken for the first time from her hospital bed at Kenyatta National Hospital.
The young woman, who is a member of the Redemption Ministers Choral Group, is recovering from a horrific acid attack that occurred a few days ago.
Her recovery journey took a visible turn this week when former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko visited her ward. During the visit, Mary shared a brief but touching update on her condition.

A Moment of Relief
Lying on her hospital bed, Mary spoke softly as Sonko approached. When asked how she was feeling, she provided a glimmer of hope for her supporters.
"Today I slept well, but one of my eyes is not seeing," she told the former Governor.
While Mary remains in a critical but stable condition, she faces a long road to recovery. She suffered severe burns to her face, chest, arms, and lower limbs.

Currently, she has regained sight in one eye, while doctors monitor the other, describing the healing process as a progressive one.
During the visit, Sonko promised to provide legal assistance for her case. He also provided a small financial gift to Mary and other patients in the ward to help with basic needs like fruit.
The Night of the Attack
The attack happened around 6:53 pm near Quiver Lounge on Ngong Road. Mary was walking home with her friend and colleague, Sarah, when they were approached by a man.
Sarah described the terrifying moment the chemical was thrown. She recalled how their clothes began to react and melt almost immediately.

"She cried out, ‘Sarah, I’m dying. Get me water. Wash my face,’"Sarah recounted.
A boda boda rider reported the incident to the police. Passers-by managed to corner the assailant before he could escape. The man was rescued from a mob by patrolling officers and taken to Mbagathi Hospital under police guard.
Arrest and Legal Action
Police investigations quickly shifted towards a suspected "love triangle" motive. On March 23, authorities arrested the prime suspect, identified as Elvis Opiyo. The arrest was a coordinated effort between the police and a team linked to Mike Sonko.
Authorities believe the attack was premeditated. Preliminary findings suggest Opiyo may have hired another individual to carry out the assault.
Elvis Opiyo was arraigned on Monday at a Kibera court. The police requested five additional days to complete their investigations into the matter.
As the case moves through the legal system, Mary remains under specialised care at Kenyatta National Hospital. The incident has sparked significant public outcry across Kenya, with many calling for stricter measures to combat gender-based violence.
The suspect remains in custody as detectives work to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy.
