A routine Sunday afternoon in Kimutwa village, Machakos county, turned tense when a resident thwarted a brazen robbery attempt through quick thinking and sheer determination.
The incident occurred around 3pm on March 22, when a vehicle heading towards Machakos stopped just outside the victim’s premises.
Police reported that two men inside the car beckoned him over, claiming they were selling assorted goods.
Initially, the interaction appeared harmless, prompting the resident to approach the vehicle.
According to officers, the passenger began displaying images of goods on his phone, claiming they were for sale.
Moments later, however, the situation escalated. The driver requested the victim’s phone under the pretext of saving his contact, but the resident sensed danger and refused.
“Immediately after he declined, the driver grabbed the phone forcefully,” police said.
In a split-second reaction, the victim lunged halfway into the vehicle to reclaim his device. The driver, undeterred, started the engine and sped off, dragging the resident along.
What followed was a tense struggle that could have ended in disaster. Demonstrating quick thinking and resolve, the victim grabbed the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and come to a sudden stop in the shrubs.
Realizing their phone-snatching plan had failed, the suspects abandoned the car and fled on foot.
The victim promptly raised the alarm, drawing attention from nearby members of the public.
Their quick response proved critical, as officers from Konza police station, who were on patrol at Kwa-Mwau Trading Centre, were alerted.
Police said the officers responded promptly and pursued the suspects,, eventually arresting them a short distance from the scene.
The two men are currently in custody at Konza police station, awaiting processing and subsequent arraignment.
Police emphasized that the swift response by both the public and law enforcement prevented the robbery from succeeding and ensured that the suspects were quickly apprehended.
A follow-up search at the scene yielded key evidence, which police said points to possible involvement of the suspects in other criminal activities.
A second registration plate was found hidden under the vehicle's bonnet.
The vehicle used in the attempted robbery was recovered and towed to the station.
POlice said the incident highlights the importance of vigilance, alertness, and public cooperation in the fight against crime.
Authorities noted that the victim’s courage, combined with rapid action by the officers, was instrumental in thwarting the robbery and preventing potential harm.
Police continue to urge residents to remain cautious when approached by strangers under seemingly ordinary circumstances.
